First Stop

Well, we're off, and to a rocky start at that. More on that later.

We picked a beautiful morning to start, with the sun out and traffic light. After a couple of hours, we made it to Richmond, where we met "Wild" Bill Sheehy on his first day at his new assignment. The guys at Quint 11 gave us our first dose of Southern hospitality and fire department tradition with a hearty lunch and a station tour. The area looks like a fun place to be a fireman, and the guys are great. To top it off, we got a visit from my 4 Engine backstep brother Ian O'Byrne.

After a pit stop in Henrico for gas, we had a saddle bag malfunction. Turns out, when the bag gets sucked into the rear wheel, it's hard to stay upright. Eric's OK, for the most part, but it looks like I'll be going on alone. The guys at Henrico Fire Station 12 were nice enough to bring us back to their firehouse, where we got to put up out feet and arrange a ride for Eric's wounded bike. Updates to follow.

Motorcycling for Ovarian Cancer Awareness

This summer, I’m riding my Harley across the country and back in 16 days. I’ll be stopping at firehouses along the way to promote awareness about ovarian cancer, because everyone should know the symptoms. While the fire department is a field dominated by men, we have mothers, wives, daughters, girlfriends, and sisters.

I’m asking you to support my journey by donating to the HERA Women's Cancer Foundation. My goal is to raise $6000 for HERA’s mission, a dollar for every mile I ride. They have set up a webpage for me where you can make a tax-deductible donation. HERA is not supporting my journey financially. All of the proceeds that HERA receives will go directly towards their mission. Through a combination of corporate sponsorship and my own funds, I will cover the expenses associated with my journey.
